Fractional Senior Engineer

We would rather have two days a week of an excellent engineer than five days of an adequate one. This is that role. You set the architecture, you review everything the interns write, and you make the calls that are expensive to get wrong. You are not here to manage a backlog — the founders do that. You are here so that the code we write now is code we can still build on later.
What you will do
- Make the architecture calls that are expensive to reverse later.
- Review every pull request the interns open, and review it so it teaches.
- Write the load-bearing code yourself — the agent pipeline, the data layer.
- Unblock two junior engineers fast. Being reachable matters more than being prolific.
- Tell the founders when a technical plan is wrong, early and plainly.
What we are looking for
- Five or more years shipping production software, including systems you still maintain.
- Strong TypeScript and React. You know why a server component is not a client component.
- Real database experience — schema design, migrations, and the cost of a bad index.
- You have reviewed code for less experienced engineers and can describe how you do it.
- You can be genuinely responsive within a defined window, not merely available.
- Fluent with AI coding tools, and specific about where they produce bad code.
Nice to have
- LLM application experience — evals, structured outputs, retrieval, cost tuning.
- You have been the first or second engineer somewhere before.
- Existing consulting or fractional practice, so this fits your week cleanly.
